Created in October 2008 with five members, CIIC adopted, in its early existence, a project-centered management approach. Having more than thirty research collaborators enrolled in PhD programs in external national and international universities during the last years, CIIC research was performed mainly by the means of collaboration with external national and international research units.
Although mainly supported by a variety of collaborations, research interests and research achievements were kept within few specific research streams. These research streams were tightly related to the expertise of the Informatics Engineering Department which is also hosted by Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
Following a natural growth process of research units maturity cycle, CIIC defined recently a more accurate scope and internal structure around the well know research groups organizational model. Each research group has its research stream, with intersections among groups, resulting in collaboration interfaces and join work among different groups and group members. Scientifically CIIC is structured around four main research areas, Computational Intelligence and Optimization, Communications and Telematics, Computer Graphics and Sound Research, Health Informatics, with strong emphasis on applied research.
CIIC structure is designed to be aligned in one hand with past research experience and achievements, and in the other hand to be aligned with the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation defined at regional, national and European levels.
