IAIoTSecurity – Exploring the use of artificial intelligence techniques in the detection of security incidents in IoT networks

  • Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought many opportunities in contexts such as smart cities, smart agriculture and industry 4.0. However, several challenges arising from the Internet of Things remain open. Regarding cybersecurity, one of the approaches used is the detection of intrusions which requires solutions specifically designed for the IoT. In this context, detection methods based on anomaly identification and machine learning have obtained promising results. In this project, we explore the use of machine learning to identify security incidents in IoT networks in the context of smart cities and smart agriculture. Components and security incidents of these ecosystems will be characterized and simulated. Traffic data will be collected and used to build a representative dataset which will serve as a basis for evaluating different machine learning techniques in their applicability to the considered scenarios and capacity to identify incidents.

Agricity

  • Abstract: The objective of this project is to create a platform that (i) using ion-selective electrodes (crystalline membrane electrodes), currently available on the market, that detect and monitor over time the presence of heavy metal contaminants, namely copper, (ii) collect information from a network of these sensors, dispersed in urban agricultural land; (iii) and communicate the data obtained in real time to a central platform; (iv) centrally analyze the collected data and make them available to interested parties – farmers, city council or civil protection officials. As these sensors are immersed in a solution (the water that will be used for irrigation) whose concentration levels can be influenced by dimensions such as rainfall, temperature or air humidity, it is also the objective of this project to implement an additional set of sensors that detects and monitors these parameters. This network of additional sensors, although foreseen to contextualize the sensing of copper in water, will not be a network of minor importance since, given its capillarity and geographic distribution, it could be used as a monitoring network with high resolution that allows those who manage urban spaces to monitor relevant parameters to identify vulnerabilities in a context of climate change, for example extreme meteorological episodes, for example temperatures or “flashfloods”.

CRASH – Development of a high precision
reconstruction system designed to be used in a professional simulation
environment related with real crash events

  • Objectives:Development of a 3D scanning system for the accident scene, and a 3D digitalization system for vehicles with precise definition of the deformations suffered during an accident. We need a system to create the accident scene with the identification of all accident forensic evidences and their measurement definition and to convert the 3D digitalization of the accident scene and vehicles into solid mechanical models with the physical properties necessary to do computational simulations. Develop of a system for rapid data collecting at the accident scene that allows the 3D scans to be performed. This system must be user friendly In order to be used by road traffic authorities or motorway management staff.Development of DS/AI models capable of feeding environment simulations with additional data, delivering additional insights related to the accident timeline. This models need the ability to relate 3D objects and evidences to other sources of precise information (sensors), to reconstruct the whole accident timeline combining data and relevant 3D objects and to identify and include at any timeline moment relevant vehicle mechanic and dynamic models, related any kind 3D object.Development of kinematic and dynamic models to perform the reconstruction of the accident collision moment and the paths before and after the impact. Definition of the mechanical equations of kinematic and dynamic behaviour of physical models resulting from the 3D scanning. Integration of the information recorded in the vehicles to feed the vehicle dynamic behaviour and driver behaviour. Creation of models for data processing that allow the behaviour simulation of the vehicle and the driver.

EES Data Lab – Spatiotemporal Data Models and Algorithms for Earth and Environmental Sciences

  • Abstract: Scientists and engineers working in fields such as the environmental sciences, the oceans, climate, or earth sciences have access to massive amounts of geo-referenced data. These data allow monitoring and studying the behavior of objects or events of interest over time, making diagnoses and predictions, etc. These tasks assume the existence of good quality data and methods and tools to analyze the data with little effort. Currently, many tools help on managing, process, and analyse spatial data, but the same does not happen when one intends to work with spatial data that evolves over time. This project focuses on the development of models and tools for the processing of spatiotemporal (SPT) data, based on two case studies: environmental engineering and marine ecology. SPT data will be modelled as 2D and 3D geometries that can change position, shape, or size continuously over time (moving objects). The first case study consists of modelling the spread of controlled fires using data extracted from aerial images (videos) captured in field experiments carried out recently. The second case study consists of modelling the evolution of coral reefs based on data collected periodically. The strategy will consist of testing solutions and defining guidelines for future research. We will have in mind the study of solutions for the areas of databases and GIS, as well as more recent trends, namely machine learning, data stream analysis, and digital twins

Security Analytics – Near real-time analytics for cybersecurity

  • Abstract: Using intelligent systems capable of processing large volumes of security event data from different sources with the application of machine learning techniques allows for identifying anomalies that have occurred and protecting the environment from future incidents. Among the open study topics in this context are the identification of intrusions and the maintenance of privacy. Approaches for analytical environments for cybersecurity usually consider a centralized environment with data collected from different sources. However, periodic data extraction with load in a centralized environment may not be the best solution to process recent data, being better near-real-time solutions. This project will study the use of machine learning in the context of near real-time analytical processing to identify security incidents. Data from different sources will be considered, such as network traffic and user and system activity logs. As such data sources commonly store personal information, the project will also address the maintenance of privacy in the context of security analytics.

SmartSIGN S2X – Development of intelligent road signs

  • Abstract: Road accidents are a civilizational phenomenon resulting from the circulation of large numbers of vehicles on public roads. There are four interrelated factors at their origin: the human, the vehicle, the infrastructure and the environment. In what respects to the infrastructure components, vertical traffic signs are particularly important. In fact, a significant part of accidents occurs because drivers do not see, or ignore, traffic signs, particularly in adverse weather conditions or because of drivers’ distraction. To overcome these issues, recently algorithms have been developed for the treatment of images taken by cameras installed in vehicles, which allow the automatic recognition of signs and the transmission of the respective information to the driver. However, one of the challenges of these systems is their dependence on adverse weather conditions that may hinder, or even turn impossible, the recognition of vertical signs through the respective captured images. In this sense, the main objective of this project is to overcome these limitations by developing “active/intelligent” traffic signs which, in addition to their visual content, ensure that their information is received by road users through other means of communication, independent from weather conditions. To this end, it will be developed a technological solution – SmartSIGN S2X –involving disruptive developments in three essential areas: the vertical signs themselves, which should incorporate  modules  for  the  transmission  of  information  via  radiofrequency;  the communications and protocols, which should enable adaptation to technologies and protocols of wireless communication between components and public roads, for which harmonised  specifications  are  being  developed  between  European  countries;  an application for the management of the incoming data resultant from traffic signs that, through  a  proper  interface  platform,  allows  the  effective  communication  of  the respective information to users.

Development of a Transnational Network of Video Game Technology Demonstration Centers applied to the digital transformation of SMEs in SUDOE´s priority economic sectors (Interreg Sudoe Project SOE3/P2/E0927)

  • Abstract: The project intends to establish an innovative service to support the expansion of the market of small companies in the video games and gamification sector that provide solutions for the “digital transformation” of the SUDOE economic sectors. This innovative service consists of the creation of a series of Demonstration Centers (GAMELABs) in the SUDOE territory that will allow small companies and start-ups in the sector to show their products in a practical way and, in parallel, provide training related to these technologies and provide co-working spaces to develop pilot projects aimed at different key sectors of the SUDOE economy. Each of the Centers will specialize in applications for one of the SUDOE´´s priority economic sectors and will operate in a network, allowing digital game companies to present demonstrators of their products in the set of regions participating in the Project. The main innovative aspects are: – The implementation of a model of Demonstration Centers that allows simultaneously showing demonstrators of digital game solutions, e.g. simulators, process virtualization, augmented reality applications, serious games for customer loyalty, oriented to an economic sector core of each region or territory, facilitate the creation of new solutions through the interaction between programmers and user companies and train new professionals in the knowledge and use of new digital game technologies and applications. – This model will adapt to be applied in several regions and with different sectoral approaches. Throughout the project, the model and its results will be evaluated and proposals for improvement will be identified, for later transfer to new regions of the SUDOE. – Networking between the centers will make it easier for SMEs proposing digital game solutions to present demonstrators of their products in different regions, applied to different economic sectors. – The application of an eminently practical approach involves promoting the “Digital Transformation” of the key sectors of the SUDOE, presenting real demonstrators and creating solutions that are representative of the sector corresponding to the reach of SMEs. This will be possible thanks to the involvement and interaction between SMEs in the video games and gamification sector, proponents of solutions, large ICT companies that integrate solutions and clusters that integrate the value chain of a given sector.

SmartWalk: Smart Cities for Active Senior Citizens

  • Abstract: SmartWalk aims at increasing the quality of life of the elder population by creating tools to monitor and help to preserve functional capacities. The increase of elderly population makes a pressing matter the promotion of healthy ageing, with autonomy and independence, and preserving functional capacities. Active Aging is a priority area of the Health 2020 policy of the EU. Additional to this concept exists the concept of Aging in Place that reflects the desire to be at home while ageing. SmartWalk proposes the creation of a physical activity monitoring system for smart cities (SC). It comprises mobile devices to acquire and transmit biometric data to a server via existing SC communication infrastructure, for a trustworthy and free service. A back-office application allows health professionals, and relevant institutions, to see the data and propose small routine changes to promote adequate physical condition, if necessary. The proposals are communicated to users via their mobile device.

OnTRACK: On Time to Rethink ACtivity Knowledge – a personalized health coaching platform to tackle physical inactivity in COPD

  • Abstract: Physical inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for death worldwide. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it is particularly serious as inactivity increases patients’ risk for hospitalizations, mortality and reduced quality of life. Improving patients’ PA is thus a global priority for governments, policy makers and clinicians. Mobile health (mHealth) applications are ubiquitous and may help patients be more physically active. However, previous studies yielded mixed results due to the lack of consideration of contextual factors. As a complex behaviour, PA is influenced by an interplay of individual, social and environmental factors and PA preferences that may act as barriers/facilitators. OnTRACK will develop, evaluate and disseminate a personalized health coaching platform which considers an individual’s preferences and contextual factors.

LINPOSYS: Low-cost Indoor Positioning System

  • Abstract: The aim of Linposys is to carry out research, development and performance evaluation of a novel low-cost Indoor Positioning System (IPS) based on a small FM-TDM-WCDMA (Frequency Modulation – Time Division Multiplexing – Wide Code Division Multiple Access) network. The positioning process is performed with the help of an artificial neural network.

STRETCHTRONICS: Soft And Stretchable Mechatronics For Wearable Devices: Fabrication, Implementation And Applications

  • Abstract: Stretchtronics is a project to investigate novel fabrication methods and show-case applications of Stretchable Electronics, including wearable systems for biomonitoring and active prosthetic hands. It also involves methods and materials for additive manufacturing (3D printing) of stretchable electronics. SFCoLAB: Smart Farm CoLAB

  • Abstract: SMART FARM CoLAB is a Collaborative Laboratory for Digital Innovation in agriculture based in Portugal West Region which aim is to generate integrative high-tech solutions into the horticulture-viticulture -fruticulture production sectors. TabMir: Miróbriga Taverns

  • Abstract: TabMir is an interdisciplinary study of a Roman imperial city, with the possibility of extending to the Suevi-Visigoth period, from the second half of century I to the first half of century VI. It aims to approach in a stratigraphic way a type of urban sector barely known of the Roman Lusitania. In this sense, it is not only a study per si of architectural realities and their evolution, with Miróbriga as the case study, but an integrated study, including specialists of Imperial Roman Archeology and Late Antiquity, Archeometry, Zooarchaeology, Topography, Computer Engineering and Conservation and Restoration, involving 9 institutions from 2 countries.
